The Makahuena resort complex where this home is located in sunny Poipu, on the south side of Kauai is a well known destination for the discerning traveler.  It also offers a large pool, hot tub and tennis court for our guests.  Close by are many excellent restaurants, botique shops, and unique island gift stores.

Kauai, know as the "Garden Island" is the oldest of the habitable hawaiian island chain.  Located at 22° North latitude this island is truly a tropical paradise with a lush rural setting.  The delightful trade winds keep the island temperatures comfortable year round.

Outdoor activities abound with hiking trails, surfing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, swimming, bicycling, tennis and so many more.  Try a zip-line tour; view the island from the air with a breathtaking helicoptor tour; get down and dirty with an ATV tour; learn to windsurf or scuba dive; take a sunset cruise along the coastline; watch the humpback whales and spinner dolphins put on an improptu show; attend a luau and try some poi.  And when it is time to relax enjoy a cool mai tai and a good book on your private lanai.   For your evening, experience a fantastic island dinner at one of Kauai's wonderful open air restaurants. Or have your personal chef create a gourmet meal served on your private lanai.

Poipu, on the southern shore of Kauai is the destination of choice on the island.  Poipu Beach, just a 5-7 minute stroll from the house, with its renowned sunrises and sunsets offers comfortable swimming throughout the year.  Right on the beach you can rent surf boards, paddleboards, and sign up for lessons.  Across the street you can rent snorkel gear or purchase the latest in beach wear.

Kauai Golfing: There are two championship 18-hole courses available near the resort: The Kiahuna Golf Course and the prestigious Poipu Bay Resort Course. Guests need to arrange with the individual courses for tee times. Within driving distance are several other courses in Wailua, Princeville, Kalaheo, and Kapa'a.

If you like crashing waves you will be blown away by this place. The only rooms that don't have a view of miles of shoreline are the bathrooms! Our week here was pure bliss- even during a couple of days of tropical downpour we were captivated by the ocean. We are regular Kauai visitors and have stayed in many homes and condos - believe me, this home is more than a condo unit. You have the use of the tennis courts, the spa and pool, and the BBQs but you also have total privacy with your own pool and yard. Inside was lovely and comfortable. Jim and Juliana keep it spotless and want you to feel like an honored friend of the family. They even have a nice assortment of spices and herbs ready for you. We even saw the famous "Green Flash"!

Perfection!

We stayed two weeks in September-October, 2016. Could not have possibly been better--180 degree panorama of the ocean, including sunsets; excellently equipped house; lovely plunge pool (that we used almost every day!); and many above average restaurants within 5-10 minutes. The property managers, Juliana and Jim, were most accomodating and eased our stay.

Kauai is absolutely captivating! Highlights included the Na Pali coast boat trip (try Liko cruises); helicopter ride; Aulii luau (get the premium tickets--they are worth it; the shops and Wednesday afternoon market at Kukui'ula, etc., etc.

It was a memorable vacation for our 40th anniversary!!

La Dolce Vita (The Sweet Life)

VRBO rentals are always a little bit of a gamble but when we arrived at Makahuena we knew right away that we had hit the jackpot. We absolutely loved the home, the view, the location. Upon arrival the house was immaculately clean and prepared for us with fresh flowers, ceiling fans running, open windows, and a welcome card on the table. Our only regret was not booking a longer trip.

Pros:
- Luxury home with high-end finishes
- 180 degree, unobstructed view of the ocean
- Waves crashing against the shore just feet from the house creates a perfect soundtrack for relaxation.
- Fully supplied kitchen
- Lovely pool
- Feels like a well cared for second home with attractive art, gorgeous furniture and quality everywhere you look.
- Great internet speed

Cons:
- Parking is not directly adjacent to the home, must walk about 200 feet from lot to home.

Elegant Beauty

? ? ? ? ?

Two related couples spent the past week at this house. The ocean is RIGHT THERE! We loved the sound of the crashing waves when we woke up and the views when we shared cocktails and meals on the upper deck. Although there is a great lower floor with a wet bar inside and a private swimming pool perched on the lava cliff, we only went down there to do laundry. The upstairs was just too perfect to leave it. The kitchen is fully equipped. There is a community pool and hot tub just steps away. That was a very sociable way to share an evening cocktail. The Grand Hyatt and Poipu Bay Golf Course are a short walk away. The walk along the cliffs bordering the back nine is spectacular. All in all, it would be difficult to improve on this house and setting.

Whales, Waves, Sunsets and Turtles

We were 2 couples who had a 2 weeks stay at this fantastic ocean front home in Poipu. There is an uninterrupted view of the ocean clear across the bay to Poipu. Although there is a basement family room, we never used it because the view from the upper lanai was so wonderful. The surf was very rough but the turtles managed to hang out right below the pool patio for our continued entertainment! There are neighbors around the house as there are condo complexes both behind and beside...but it still felt very private. The walkway from the parking lot to the house is fairly steep and I would not recommend this house for anyone that has trouble with walking or stairs. We bought fish at the fish market in Koloa, wine at The Wine shop and cooked in most nights in the well equipped kitchen. A 10 minute walk to Brennecke's Beach Broiler at Poipu Beach is a must. Ahi tacos, ceviche, fish and chips ...and a refreshing margarita are the reward. It is also possible to walk to the Hyatt and they have multiple restaurants. We ate at Dondero's....I only give the food a C but the atmosphere is great. We loved the house and would recommend it. The weather for our stay could have been sunnier. The sunshine really warmed up the pool--which could be chilly otherwise.

Best Place I've Ever Stayed

My husband and I were fortunate enough to spend three weeks at the Alaula Sunset Glow vacation home. I loved staying at this place so much that I still can't get it off my mind a few months later. The home is right on the ocean and every room has ocean views. The sound of the waves breaking on the rocks is a constant soothing sound. The house itself is beautiful. Every room has granite countertops. The two master suites are spacious and the lower floor is perfect for gatherings and socializing but there is also enough room down there for another couple to stay. The private pool is also really nice. Every evening we couldn't wait to watch the sun set. The wrap around deck also gives unobstructed views of the ocean and the sunset but it is also an incredible vantage point for whale watching. It is within close walking distance to the beaches. I honestly can't think of one negative thing to say about this home or our stay there.

Ocean Front House With Amazing Views - And a Personal Pool

What a treat! First, the setting was amazing. The home is sitting by itself, so no neighbors, despite being in a condo complex. We enjoyed watching the whales surface and even breach. Bring binoculars! There is no beach-the house sits on a small cliff with large boulders making the ocean inaccessible-but there are two beaches, one to the east, one to the west- each reachable by a 10-15 min walk. The house was spotless and had everything you would need, from a beach umbrella to flashlights, to fans in all the rooms, to bar accessories. Most everything was in mint condition. The houses swimming pool was on the cool side. The condo complex pool, a 100 ft walk, had a large pool and hot tub as well. A great house to stay right there and relax but also well located for a base station for Kauai activities.
